Malpensa and Linate to the Duomo, Step by Step

Train-by-train routes from both airports into zone 1, with timings, change points and the last-mile walk.

From Malpensa, the fast option is the Trenord Leonardo Express to Milano Centrale: about 35–40 minutes, with trains roughly every 30 minutes at peak and every hour off peak. Tickets are sold by Trenord, separately from the ATM network, so the metro ticket in your pocket does not cover this leg.

The cheaper alternative is the regional service, about 60 minutes into the city. It matters most in off-peak hours, when it is sometimes the only train serving the airport — check which service is running before you commit to a platform.

At Milano Centrale you switch to the metro. Duomo station is served by M1 and M3, and because M1 and M2 share the downtown axis between Cadorna and Centrale, the ride south needs at most one interchange. From Duomo station the cathedral is about five minutes on foot.

End to end, allow roughly an hour from the Malpensa platform to the cathedral square in good conditions: 35–40 minutes on the express, a short transfer, one metro ride and the walk.

Linate is the city airport, and this guide's data records no Trenord airport train for it: the onward leg is by surface transport. The moment you are on the ATM network, the same rules as everywhere else apply — an ordinary 90-minute ticket, stamped once, covers zone 1 and the Duomo.

Whichever airport you land at, the last-mile logic is identical: get to the metro, ride into zone 1, walk. The tickets and zones page explains the fare you will use after the train, and the getting around page covers the tram and bike options for the final kilometre.

  • Step 1 — Malpensa arrivals: follow the signs to the Trenord platforms and buy the airport ticket from Trenord.
  • Step 2 — Ride the Leonardo Express, 35–40 min to Milano Centrale (regional: ~60 min).
  • Step 3 — At Centrale, enter the metro and ride toward Duomo station (M1/M3).
  • Step 4 — Exit at Duomo; the cathedral is about a 5-minute walk.
