Getting Around Without the Metro

Sixteen tram lines, a 3,700-bike share scheme and a walkable centre — when they beat the underground, and how the ticket rules change on street.

The tram network runs about 16 lines over roughly 240 km of track. Trams run on street alongside road traffic, so journey times in the centre are closer to bus times than to metro times: the tram is a scenic middle option, not a fast one.

Where trams win is on short hops along streets the metro skips. If your route is a straight line down a tram street, riding two stops above ground beats descending, interchanging and climbing back out. The ticket is the same ordinary 90-minute ticket — stamped at the stop machine before you board.

BikeMi places about 3,700 bikes at roughly 400 stations across the city. A day pass costs about €4 and the first 30 minutes of each ride are free, which makes short central hops effectively free: Brera to the Duomo is about 1 km, cheaper by bike than by ticket. The city has around 20 km of cycle lanes.

Walking is the underrated option. The Navigli canal district is about 1 km end to end, and the whole centre is compact enough that walking is often the most direct way across it — even when the metro line looks shorter on the map. Stairs, interchanges and waits eat the metro's speed advantage on short distances.

Choose by distance: under a kilometre, walk or take a bike; along a tram street, take the tram; across town, the metro still wins, with at most one interchange on the shared M1/M2 axis. The fare that covers all three surface options is explained on the tickets and zones page.

  • Tram — same ordinary ticket, stamped at the stop; expect bus-like times in the centre.
  • BikeMi — ~€4 a day, first 30 minutes of each ride free.
  • On foot — the Navigli are ~1 km end to end; the centre rewards walking.
